Major Political Parties of Bangladesh

Bangladesh politics is two parties based for the couple of years. There are two leading political parties and besides some small political parties also exists. Of Bangladeshi political party, Bangladesh Awami League is the oldest political party, on the other hand Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) is formed in the decade of 1970. Currently both parties are leading two coalitions where Bangladesh Awami League leading coalition is ruling government. 

Bangladesh Awami League: 
Formed in 1949, Bangladesh Awami League is one of the major party in Bangladesh. The party was founded with the aim to remain as an alternative to then ruling party Pakistan Muslim League. The party was initiated by then leader Hussein Shaheed Suhrawardi and Abul Hashim. In 23rd June of 1949, the first committee of East Pakistan Awami Muslim League was commenced in Rose garden Dhaka. Its first president was Mowlana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhasani and Shamshul Hoque of Tangail was General Secretary of the party. Sheikh Mujibur Rahman who elected as president of the party later was one of the first joint secretaries of Awami League. 

Awami League is the party which played consequent role in the language movement, 6 point movement, the movement against autocratic Ayub government and finally lead Bangladesh in the liberation war. After independence of Bangladesh, the party formed a national government and rebuilt the nation. The Bangladesh Awami League was in office till 1975, in their first term. Later in 1996, Awami League won the national election and came into office. This time they played an important role to mitigate some international issue such as sharing the water of the river Ganges. The Bangladesh Awami League played its role as an opposition party in 2001 to 2006. On December 2008 the party won the national election with a coalition and formed a government. Currently they are ruling party in the national assembly. Sheikh Hasina is president of the Bangladesh Awami League now where Syed Ashraful Islam is general secretary. 

Bangladesh Nationalist Party: 
Another dominant political party of Bangladesh is Nationalist Party (BNP). Then president of Bangladesh Ziaur Rahman founded the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in 1st September 1978. Ziaur Rahman was first co-ordinator and chairmen of the party where Dr. AQM Badruddouza Chowdhury was party secretary general. 

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party was effective to unite the divided nation into political belief. During first BNP tenure, Bangladesh significantly developed its diplomatic relation with different countries. After the assassination of the founder, the BNP came to power in 1991 after a long movement against military ruler Ershad. In 2001 they came to power with 210 seats in parliament. This time the party was leading a coalition named four party alliance. Begum Khaleda Zia is chairperson of the BNP and Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir is secretary general of the party. 

Jatiya Party: 
On 1st January 1986, the president of Bangladesh, Hussein Muhammad Ershad formed Bangladesh Jatiya Party. The Jatiya Party won the election of 1988 and formed a government. After the rise of democracy in 1991, the Jatiya Party never got majority seats in parliament. Presently Jatiya Party is a partner of a coalition led by the Awami League. Still now Ershad is the president of the party. 

Beside these major political parties there are any other party like Bangladesh Jaamat-e- Islami, Communist Party of Bangladesh, Basod, and Jasod etc.
